The Flame Dragon and Fire Dragon are species of monsters found in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. These monsters, resembling tall, bipedal dragons, are palette swaps of each other and have differing levels of power and defense. There are two similar yet different versions of the Flame Dragon enemy, and both versions are "boss-style" monsters that appear together as one scripted boss encounter.

Flame Dragon (large)[]

Flame Dragon Big

The Flame Dragon, specifically the larger version of it, is a huge yellow-bodied variant with a red face. Statistically, this monster is a "boss"-style monster, which has 5724 HP, 250 PP that regenerate 4 PP per turn, 400 Attack, 137 Defense, 158 Agility, and 48 Luck. In terms of resistance, it has a Mars Resistance rating of 175, Venus and Jupiter Resistance ratings of 100, and a Mercury Resistance rating of 25, and in regards to its battle commands it uses its available Mars-based attacks with a Mars power rating of 115.

In battle, this Flame Dragon uses the following battle commands:

  • Rolling Flame: Used 53 out of 256 times, this is a Monster Skill where the dragon generates a powerful cylindrical burst of flames through the party, dealing a Mars-based attack equal to its normal physical attack with an additional 100 damage points and with a range of 3.
  • Rising Dragon: Used 47 out of 256 times, this is a unique Psynergy spell where the monster summons a long thin column of dragon-shaped fire from underneath a target Adept, carrying the Adept along with it far into the sky and exploding to let the Adept fall back down to the ground, dealing a Mars-based attack with a power rating of 250. This consumes 37 of its user's PP.
  • Meteor Blow: Used 41 out of 256 times, this is a unique Psynergy spell whose effect is classified and presented as a Summon sequence: A huge red meteor is summoned from the twilit night sky to crash and explode into the battlefield in a fashion similar in concept to the Meteor summon but visually distinctive. This deals a Mars-based attack that has a base power rating of 120 and also lowers the target Adept's HP by a certain percentage of its maximum HP. As a Summon-style effect, this affects all party members, but the Adepts next to the targeted Adept will only take 70%, 40%, and 30% of the force that the targeted Adept takes, in each case depending on how nearby the Adept is placed in relation to the targeted Adept. This ability consumes 21 of its user's PP.
  • Flame Breath: Used 40 out of 256 times, this Monster Skill has the monster generating a mass of fire at the party of Adepts, dealing a Mars-based attack with a power rating of 170 and a range of 3 (the Adepts at either side of the specifically targeted Adept will only take 50% of the attack's force, instead of the normal 80%, however).
  • Cage: Used 35 out of 256 times, this is a Monster Skill that generates an orange spherical image surrounding a targeted Adept, and there is a small chance that Adept will be inflicted with Stun for one turn.
  • Stun Muscle: Used 29 out of 256 times, this is a Monster Skill where the monster charges forward cloaked in a large glowing ball of white-red energy and tackles a targeted Adept, dealing a Mars-based attack equal to the monster's normal physical attack multiplied by 1.3.
  • Attack: Used 11 out of 256 times, this is this monster's standard physical attack.

Felling this Flame Dragon yields 2502 Experience Points and 1521 Coins. If it is somehow felled by the attack effect of an offensive Mercury Djinni, its rewards increase to 3252 EXP and 1977 Coins. In The Lost Age in Mars Lighthouse only one of this version of Flame Dragon is fought, as part of a scripted boss encounter alongside the other version of the Flame Dragon that occurs in a room where you can see the two dragons encased in a huge slab of ice. This boss encounter begins after casting Blaze to create a crack in the ice, then using Burst on the ice slab to break it open. The two enemies together yield a total of at least 5004 EXP and 3393 Coins, as well as a guaranteed Psy Crystal. This is a mandatory boss battle that is important to the plot and is relevant to this and this (spoiler warning necessary).

The two Flame Dragons make for a rather powerful and threatening duo that take a rather long time to defeat due to their HP meters. Typical RPG battling logic would dictate that you focus all your attacks on one Flame Dragon until you fell it so that you can more safely battle the other one; the question to consider is which dragon it should be. This Flame Dragon is stuffed with powerful group-damaging attacks that could end up downing some of your party members, but the other one has the effect of putting your Djinn into Recovery mode, making your party statistically weaker and less able to perform summons. (Summons, by the way, do massive damage to any enemy with a large HP meter like the Flame Dragons.)

  • Djinnfest: Used 41 out of 256 times, this is a Monster Skill that acts first in a given turn, and generates a series of large glowing musical note symbols that briskly floats through the party of Adepts. Each Adept has one of his or her Set or Standby Djinn put into Recovery mode.
  • Supernova: Used 35 out of 256 times, this is a Psynergy spell that generates a huge, extended explosion of fiery energy at the entire party, dealing a Mars-based attack with a power rating of 150 and a range of 7. It consumes 31 of its user's PP.
  • Healing Aura: Used 29 out of 256 times, this is a Psynergy spell that restores at least 100 HP to each unit on the user's side of the field. This ability consumes 11 of its user's PP.
  • Break: Used 23 out of 256 times, this is Psynergy spell that removes any statistical buffs from the current battling party. This ability consumes 5 of its user's PP.
  • Heat Kiss: Used 17 out of 256 times, this is a Monster Skill where the monster blows out a large, quick array of glowing valentine-shaped symbols at the party of Adepts, debuffing up to three Adepts by temporarily lowering their Attack values by 25%.
  • Attack: Used 11 out of 256 times, this is this monster's standard physical attack.

Felling this Flame Dragon yields 2502 Experience Points and 1872 Coins, and at the end of the boss fight you're guaranteed to earn a Psy Crystal. If it is somehow felled by the attack effect of an offensive Mercury Djinni, its rewards increase to 3252 EXP and 2433 Coins. Typical RPG battling logic would dictate that you focus all your attacks on one Flame Dragon until you fell it so that you can more safely battle the other one; the question to consider is which dragon it should be. This Flame Dragon is generally less outwardly powerful, and its healing ability can be said to be negligible, but it has the potentially deadly maneuver of putting your Djinn into Recovery mode, which often temporarily lowers your character classes so that you're sharply less durable and physically capable until the Djinni recovers back.

Fire Dragon[]

Fire Dragon

A Fire Dragon is a normal-sized violet variant with a dark purple/blue face. Statistically, this monster has 648 HP, 40 PP, 513 Attack, 178 Defense, 166 Agility, and 35 Luck. In terms of resistance, it has a Mars Resistance rating of 175, Venus and Jupiter Resistance ratings of 100, and a Mercury Resistance rating of 25, and in regards to its battle commands it uses its available Mars-based attacks with a Mars power rating of 115.

In battle, the Fire Dragon uses the following battle commands:

  • Attack: Used 4 out of 8 times, this is this monster's standard physical attack.
  • Fire Breath: Used 2 out of 8 times, this Monster Skill has the monster generating a mass of fire at the party of Adepts, dealing a Mars-based attack with a power rating of 180 and a range of 3 (the Adepts at either side of the specifically targeted Adept will only take 50% of the attack's force, instead of the normal 80%, however).
  • Dragon Fume: Used 2 out of 8 times, this is a Psynergy spell that shoots out a huge serpentine entity of flame that arcs over and crashes into the targeted Adept, dealing a Mars-based attack with a power rating of 230. It consumes 35 of its user's PP; it can only use this once per battle.

Felling a Fire Dragon yields 641 Experience Points and 354 Coins, and there is a 1/128 chance that the monster will drop an Atropos' Rod. If it is felled by the attack effect of an offensive Mercury Djinni, its rewards increase to 833 EXP and 460 Coins, and the chance to drop its held item becomes 1/32. In The Lost Age it is fought throughout the dungeon portion of Yampi Desert Cave, though its appearance rate is not as common as other monsters.

The Fire Dragon is easily the enemy that takes the most hits to fell in Yampi Desert Cave. It is respectably strong as well. But this monster is mainly noted for its desirable random drop and the rarity for the item to be dropped. Because the Fire Dragon does not appear quite as often as other types of monsters, it is all the more popular for Random Number Generator abuse.

This incarnation of the Flame Dragon also has a Psynergy named after it. Fire Dragon, the strongest of the Wyvern Psynergy set when in the Beast Lord class, summons the monster to breathe fire upon three enemy targets.
