The Gargoyle, Clay Gargoyle, and Ice Gargoyle are species of monsters found in Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. These monsters, resembling demons in the classic image of gargoyles but in flesh-and-blood and holding small scimitars and ellipsoid shields with "three-eyed face" designs on them, are palette swaps of each other and have differing levels of power and defense.

Gargoyle

Gargoyle

A member with light blue skin and red eyes and shield. The Gargoyle features 176 HP, 21 PP, 181 Attack, 81 Defense, 59 Agility, and 7 Luck. It has strong resistances to Mercury, Mars, and especially Jupiter offenses but much less resistant toward Venus.

The Gargoyle can physically attack, cast the Guard Psynergy on itself to increase its defense rating, cast the Quake Sphere Psynergy for Venus damage against all Adepts, and cast the monster skill Ice Blessing for moderate Mercury damage against multiple Adepts. Its low PP rating limits its flexibility with these Psynergy moves.

Felling a Gargoyle yields 84 EXP, 119 coins, and in uncommon cases, a Sleep Bomb. Gargoyles can only be found and fought in Vault Cave; among the enemies there, it has the highest defense rating by a very large margin.

Clay Gargoyle

Clay Gargoyle

A member with beige skin and purple eyes and shield. In Golden Sun the Clay Gargoyle features 209 HP, 24 PP, 210 Attack, 90 Defense, 84 Agility, and 7 Luck. Strangely enough, in The Lost Age its HP rating has been increased to somewhere around 300; usually, monsters that return in The Lost Age are exactly the same as they were before. It has strong resistances to Mercury, Mars, and especially Jupiter offenses but much less resistant toward Venus.

The Clay Gargoyle can physically attack, cast the Guard Psynergy on itself to increase its defense rating, cast the Spire Psynergy for moderate Venus damage against one Adept, and emit ultrasonic waves as a monster skill for moderate damage and paralysis against one Adept.

Felling a Clay Gargoyle yields 100 EXP, 119 coins, and in uncommon cases, a Nut. Clay Gargoyles can be found and fought in Altmiller Cave in Golden Sun, where its defense and agility make it one of the tougher monsters there. In The Lost Age it can be found in Gaia Rock and Izumo Ruins.

Ice Gargoyle

Ice Gargoyle

A member with light purple skin and light green eyes and shield. The Ice Gargoyle features 301 HP, 21 PP, 319 Attack, 150 Defense, 100 Agility, and 7 Luck. It has strong resistances to Mercury, Mars, and especially Jupiter offenses but much less resistant toward Venus.

The Ice Gargoyle can physically attack, cast the Guard Psynergy on itself to increase its defense rating, cast the Mother Gaia Psynergy for respectable Venus damage against all Adepts, and cast the monster skill Ice Blessing for moderate Mercury damage against multiple Adepts. Its low PP rating limits its flexibility with these Psynergy moves.

Felling an Ice Gargoyle yields 307 EXP, 170 coins, and in rare cases, a Potion. Ice Gargoyles can be fought in and around Babi Lighthouse, Tunnel Ruins, and the later portion of Venus Lighthouse. The Ice Gargoyle is noteworthy for having the highest defense rating of all random monsters in the original Golden Sun (equal to the Fusion Dragon and surpassed only by Deadbeard, with the Grand Golem having 149 defense).

Cultural allusions

Gargoyles are demonic winged monsters that have been sculpted as statues in various European cultures, such as in the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France.
