Monster Skills are various abilities available only to enemies in the Golden Sun GBA games, which have a variety of effects. Differentiating these from Psynergy abilities is that none of these subtract from their users' PP meters and the enemy can still use them even if their Psynergy has been sealed. Contrast with List of Psynergy used by enemy Adepts. It is possible to tell the difference between Psynergy and Monster Skills in-game because the battle text says that enemies "use" or "unleash" Monster Skills and "cast" Psynergy. All of the monster-only abilities in the two GBA games are listed below, categorized by effect.
All offensive effects in the game that damage multiple targets at a time use any one of three ratios that determine how much of the force the targeted enemy takes will enemies standing to the side of the targeted enemy take if the range of the area-of-effect attack include them in in its range. The various area of effect abilities in the tables below will be marked with these three symbols:
- [N]: The "Normal" ratio, in which an enemy standing one space away from the target takes 80% of the area-of-effect attack's force, an enemy standing two spaces away takes 60%, three spaces away 40%, four spaces away 20%, and finally five spaces away 10%.
- [D]: The "Diminishing" ratio, in which an enemy standing one space away from the target takes 50% of the area-of-effect attack's force, an enemy standing two spaces away takes 30%, and any enemies standing three, four, and finally five spaces away take 10% of the damage as the target.
- [S]: The "Summon" ratio, in which an enemy standing one space away from the target takes 70% of the area-of-effect attack's force, an enemy standing two spaces away takes 40%, three spaces away 30%, four spaces away 20%, and finally five spaces away 10%.

Self-duplication[]
These have a chance to introduce a new monster of the same type as the user into the battle. The battle text each skill generates gives thematic flavoring (e.g. Ooze and Slime Beast undergoing fission to duplicate themselves, Undead looking for and finding allies, etc.)
Name | Battle Text | Used By |
---|---|---|
Ally Search | The battle text reads "[enemy] looks for allies!" | Calamar Fighter Bee Undead Worm Warrior Bee Cannibal Ghoul |
Speed Surge | The battle text reads "[enemy] attempts to divide!" | Ooze Slime Beast |
Monster summoning[]
These have a chance to introduce a new monster into the battle. What type of monster it is depends on the individual ability.
Name | Effect | Visual | Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Battle Cry | Summons a monster the same type as either the user or any one of the other types of monsters accompanying the user in a given battle. | Nothing happens. Battle Text reads "[enemy] looks for allies!" | Worm |
Regen Dance | Useable only if at least one of the other units alongside the user has been felled in battle. A copy of that unit joins the battle. | The user generates several images of holographic beige feathers up out of itself. Battle text reads for the summoned enemy "[enemy] is up and ready to fight!" | Phoenix Fire Bird Wonder Bird |
Mystic Call | Useable only if less than five units are on the user's side of the field including the user itself. An individual of the following types (determined randomly) joins the battle: Anger Ball, Thunder Ball, Refresh Ball, and Guardian Ball. | The user generates an uneven array of multicolored glowing energy orbs that fly around briefly and quickly regather into the user. | Star Magician |
Summon sequences[]
These are similar to the summon sequences the party may use in that they use their own ratio for determining how much damage enemies next to the targeted enemy take (see top of article for details). Some of them deal additional damage based on the target's total HP (see the Summons page). All of these attacks use the [S] ratio; see the top of the page for more information.

Cruel Ruin | ![]() | 0.40 | The user flies offscreen, then the scene changes to a different landscape where magic energy gathers in clouds and soon explodes into a series of energy beams that begin to twist and turn and destroy the forests of the landscape. The scene changes back to the battle, where the opposing party disappears in a titanic white beam of absolute destruction that quickly turns the screen white. | Doom Dragon (Second stage) [110 ![]() Doom Dragon (Third stage) [110 ![]() |
Dragon Driver | ![]() | 0.00 | The user dumps purple fire onto the enemy party, then after a moment, generates its own purplish fiery stream of breath at the Adepts. (This is a mirror of the special effects of the Tiamat summon.) | Fusion Dragon [110 ![]() |
Outer Space | ![]() | 0.00 | The user leaps up high into outer space and immediately reenters the atmosphere, surrounded by purple fire, and collides into the opposing party with great force and fiery energy bright enough to turn the entire screen white. (This is a mirror of the special effects of the Meteor summon.) | Fusion Dragon [110 ![]() |
Star Mine | ![]() | 0.30 | The user produces four glowing circular objects that slowly collide into the opposing party, briefly but powerfully exploding with each contact | Avimander [115 ![]() |
Counterattack mode[]
This skill is like the Mars Djinni Reflux in that the user sets itself in a counterattack mode for the turn, where it will automatically deal an attack to any opponent that uses any battle command against it.
Name | Effects | Visual | Used By (with relevant statistics) |
---|---|---|---|
Counter-rush | Sets the user into "counterattack mode". Acts with increased priority. Each counterattack is a normal physical attack by the user. | When used at the start of the battle, a brief blue watery effect ensues at the user's position identical to the impact visual of the Froth Spiral Psynergy. Each counterattack for the rest of the turn is merely the user performing a physical attack. | Poseidon [302 Atk] |
Djinn manipulation[]
These abilities are quite different from each other but are linked by virtue of the fact that they are the only abilities enemies in the games may have that deal effects based on your Djinn.
Name | Effect | Range | Visual | Used By |
---|---|---|---|---|
Djinnfest | Each member of the current opposing party has one of their Djinn put into Recovery mode. Acts with increased priority. | All | The user projects a flurry of large glowing musical note symbols against the opposing party. | Karst Flame Dragon (small) |
Djinn Blast | The target has every one of its Djinn put into Recovery mode. (Affects both Set Djinn and On Standby Djinn.) | 1 | The target is engulfed in a mass of multicolored energy. | Doom Dragon (First stage) Doom Dragon (Second stage) |
Djinn Storm | All members of the opposing party (except Downed members) have every one of their Djinn put into Recovery mode. (Affects both Set Djinn and On Standby Djinn.) | All | The opposing party is engulfed in a colossal mass of multicolored, swiftly swirling energy. | Doom Dragon (Third stage) Dullahan |
Djinn Stun | Each member of the current opposing party has one of their Set Djinn put into On Standby mode. Acts with increased priority. | All | Each member of the opposing party is magically relieved of a set of glowing rainbow-colored orbs of energy that disappear off the top of the screen quickly. | Valukar |
Crucible | The user automatically performs a summon based on the amount of Djinn On Standby present on the opposing party. The highest-tier summon is always selected, and the opposing party's On Standby Djinn are put into Recovery mode as if it was a member of the opposing party that performed the summon. | All [S] | The appropriate visual of the summon involved plays. |
Do nothing[]
Name | Effects | Visual | Used By |
---|---|---|---|
Contain | The battle text reads "The baleful gaze of [enemy] turns upon you!" | Nothing happens at all | Wild Mushroom (Prologue) |
Tremble | The battle text reads "[enemy] cannot stop trembling!" | Nothing happens at all | Thief |
Threaten | The battle text reads "[enemy] glowers ferociously!" | Nothing happens at all | Thief |
Pressure | The battle text reads "[enemy] can't move!" | Nothing happens at all | Doom Dragon (First stage) |
Element Swap | Does nothing. Used by Dullahan on the turn before it summons Charon | The user briefly flashes with a rainbow light. | Dullahan |
Defense aura[]
This command is exactly like the Djinn Flash, Granite, and Shade in that it cuts all damage the affected would take from damage by the opposing party this turn, and this effect does so with increased priority. However, it only affects one target at a time; either the user itself or another unit on the user's side. Whether the user targets itself or another on its side with this effect is pre-programmed into the individual enemy's AI.
Name | Damage Reduction | Visual | Used By (with relevant statistics) |

Guard Aura | 95% | The target on the user's side is veiled by a translucent wall of energy that is briefly visible. | Doom Dragon (Second stage) [200 Agi] Doom Dragon (Third stage) [200 Agi] Guardian Ball [292 Agi] |
Defend[]
The Defend command available to the party is also available to various enemies, sometimes in variations distinctively named in the game code but whose names are not visible in norml gameplay. Regardless of the name of the ability in the code, the battle text will always just report "[enemy] is defending!"

Trivia[]
- There are two elemental physical monster skills named "Poison Sting", one of the Venus element and one of the Mercury element.
- Rolling Flame and Mine Ball are the only monster skills that are dependent on the user's Attack rating and can hit multiple targets at a time. The Shuriken psynergy is similar in this regard.
- The attack "Darksol Gasp" is a likely reference to both the evil wizard Darksol and his signature attack "Demon Breath" from the Shining in the Darkness and Shining Force game which Camelot helped develop.
Hacking strange alternative effects[]
These effects are observed when some unusual monster skills are used by the player through hacking devices:
- Mystic Call will act as the Signal Whistle item and will summon a Sea Fighter in the enemies ranks
- Interestingly, Regen Dance will not work, since it'll only target monsters that are still alive.
- Flee, Djinn Storm, Djinn Blast and Djinnfest will do absolutely nothing. It'll target one enemy, but no effect will happen.
- Speed Surge will revive an enemy that is supposed to be beaten. For example, during the fight with Agatio and Karst, if you use Speed Surge on the remaining enemy, the one that is down will be revived. As such, it doesn't really "replicate" the enemy. But even if it's resurected, present in the fight and can be targeted, you character will not attack him and it won't attack you either. And when the only remaining fighting enemy dies, you'll win the fight no matter if one of them is still alive.
- Ally Search will do the almost the same thing that Speed Surge, but here it will randomly generate a Vermin enemy in the fight that will also do nothing and that cannot be killed
- Angry Mine and Dynamite will make you explode at the face of your enemy but unlike with the enemy, it wont do any damage to yourself.
